A delicate 16th-century fan painting by Wang Guxiang, featuring ink and colour depictions of narcissus and flowering branches.
This fan painting by Wang Guxiang (1501-1568) demonstrates the refined aesthetic of the Ming Dynasty literati tradition. Wang, a native of Suzhou, was known for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre, a category of painting that prioritised the symbolic and formal qualities of nature over mere representation. The composition is formatted for a folding fan, a popular medium for scholarly exchange and personal expression during the period.
The work features a cluster of narcissus plants emerging from behind a weathered garden rock. To the right, a flowering branch extends across the fan, creating a balance between the verticality of the narcissus leaves and the horizontal reach of the blossoms. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle ink washes and muted tones to define the forms. The paper surface, aged to a warm, golden hue, provides a neutral ground that allows the delicate brushwork to remain clear.
Calligraphy occupies the upper right section of the fan, integrated into the overall design. The text provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual imagery, a common practice in Chinese painting that unites the arts of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The brushwork is precise and controlled, reflecting the disciplined training expected of a scholar-official. The rock is rendered with textured ink strokes, suggesting weight and age, while the flowers are depicted with lighter, more fluid lines. This piece captures the quiet observation of seasonal flora, a subject frequently chosen by Ming artists to convey themes of purity and resilience. The fan format imposes specific constraints on the artist, requiring a thoughtful arrangement of elements to accommodate the radiating folds of the paper while maintaining a sense of harmony and spatial depth.
