A striking woodblock print by Utagawa Sadamasu depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in a dramatic scene from Kanadehon Chushingura.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadamasu depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of the villainous Ono Sadakuro. The scene is drawn from the fifth act of the classic play Kanadehon Chushingura, a dramatisation of the historical vendetta of the forty-seven ronin. Sadamasu, a prominent artist of the Kamigata school based in Osaka, captures the actor in a moment of high tension. The character is shown in a crouched, aggressive posture, his face contorted with malice, and a trace of blood visible at his mouth. This specific pose is a classic example of a mie, a dramatic, frozen expression used in kabuki to heighten the emotional intensity of a scene.
The composition is balanced by the dark, atmospheric background, which suggests a nocturnal setting. The inclusion of a pine tree and a stone structure provides a sense of place, grounding the theatrical performance within the narrative of the play. The artist employs a refined line quality to define the actor's features and the folds of his kimono, while the muted colour palette maintains a focus on the character's dramatic presence. The print reflects the conventions of the Kamigata style, which often favoured a more realistic and understated approach compared to the more stylised prints produced in Edo during the same period.
As a yakusha-e, or actor print, this work serves as a record of a specific performance at the Naka Theater. It captures the ephemeral nature of the kabuki stage, preserving the actor's likeness and costume for the audience of the time. The attention to detail in the actor's expression and the specific staging of the scene demonstrates the technical skill of the woodblock carvers and printers who collaborated with Sadamasu to produce these works.
