A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada, capturing the Kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in a dramatic theatrical role.
This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicts the celebrated Kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of Karaki Masaemon. The work originates from the series A Tale of Valor at Iga Pass, a narrative rooted in the dramatic traditions of the Kamigata region, which encompassed Osaka and Kyoto. Unlike the larger-scale prints produced in Edo, Osaka-school prints often favoured a more intimate, character-focused approach to the theatrical arts.
Hirosada captures the actor in a moment of quiet tension. The figure is dressed in a deep indigo kimono, contrasting with the muted red of the architectural backdrop. He carries a large, circular hat and a lantern, props that define his character's journey through the night. The composition is flat, typical of the Ukiyo-e style, where the focus remains on the graphic quality of the lines and the balance of colour fields. The actor's expression is rendered with precision, reflecting the specific makeup and stylised features associated with the Kabuki stage.
Technically, the print demonstrates the skill of the Osaka carvers and printers of the mid-nineteenth century. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of indigo, slate, and earthy reds to create a sense of atmosphere. The inclusion of the actor's name and the series title within the print serves as a record of the performance, acting as a souvenir for theatre-goers of the period. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular entertainment and visual art in Japan, documenting the ephemeral nature of the stage through the permanent medium of the woodblock print.
