A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in a dramatic, snow-covered scene.
This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in a dramatic role. Hokuei was a prominent artist of the Kamigata school, which operated in the Osaka region. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on idealised beauty, the Osaka school frequently produced yakusha-e, or actor prints, that captured the specific intensity of performers on stage.
The composition shows the actor in a crouched, defensive posture, gripping a sword. His expression is one of fierce concentration, a hallmark of the mie pose used in kabuki theatre to signal a moment of high emotional tension. The figure is dressed in elaborate, patterned robes that contrast with the stark, simplified background. The snow, rendered through the absence of ink and subtle embossing, creates a cold atmosphere that frames the subject.
Hokuei uses a combination of bold outlines and delicate colour application to define the actor's features and the textures of his costume. The background includes a stylised rock formation and a suggestion of a waterfall, elements common in theatrical backdrops of the period. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hokuei to produce these works for a public eager to follow the careers of their favourite actors.
This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the theatre provided a primary source of entertainment and fashion. The print serves as a record of a specific performance, preserving the actor's likeness and the dramatic flair of the production. The use of colour, though aged, remains clear, showing the careful balance between the figure and the surrounding environment.
