Beschreibung

A striking Post-Impressionist work by Paul Gauguin, depicting a Tahitian figure at a pool with flattened forms and symbolic, non-naturalistic colour.

Painted during his first stay in Tahiti, Mysterious Water (Pape Moe) demonstrates the shift in Paul Gauguin's practice toward a more symbolic and decorative approach. The composition features a Tahitian figure leaning over a pool, captured in a moment of quiet reflection. Gauguin employs a flattened perspective, prioritising colour and form over traditional anatomical accuracy or spatial depth. The palette is composed of earthy tones, punctuated by the stark white of the figure's garment and the warm, glowing hues of the water.

Gauguin moved away from the observational methods of his earlier Impressionist work, choosing instead to construct scenes that combined his experiences in the South Pacific with his own imaginative interpretations of local mythology. The figure is rendered with simplified, bold outlines, a technique that reflects his interest in cloisonnism and woodblock printing. The surrounding foliage is treated as a series of decorative shapes, creating a sense of enclosure that draws the viewer into the scene.

The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, where the title Pape Moe is also inscribed. This painting is part of a series of works from the period that explore the relationship between the human figure and the natural environment. Gauguin's use of non-naturalistic colour serves to evoke a specific mood, rather than to record the physical appearance of the landscape. By rejecting the conventions of Western academic painting, he sought to create a visual language that felt more primal and direct. This print captures the texture and tonal shifts of the original oil painting, allowing for a close examination of his brushwork and the layered application of pigment. It remains a significant example of his pursuit of a primitive aesthetic, far removed from the urban centres of Europe.

Artist Biography

Paul Gauguin

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist whose bold experiments in colour and form synthesised a new, modern style. Though born in Paris, Gauguin spent his early childhood in Peru, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong wanderlust and a fascination with the exotic. He began his career as a stockbroker, only turning to art in his late twenties after being inspired by the Impressionists.

Gauguin soon rejected the Impressionist focus on objective representation, seeking instead to express subjective emotions and spiritual ideas through his art. This led him to develop a distinctive style characterised by flattened forms, simplified lines, and vibrant, non-naturalistic colours. Key works such as *Vision after the Sermon* (1888) exemplify this approach, showcasing his move towards Symbolism and Cloisonnism.

Frustrated with European society, Gauguin sought refuge in French Polynesia, where he created some of his most iconic paintings, including *Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?* (1897-98). These works depict the beauty and mystery of Tahitian life, albeit through a lens that has since been critiqued for its romanticised and colonial gaze. Despite his controversial legacy, Paul Gauguin's innovative use of colour and his exploration of primal themes profoundly influenced the development of modern art.
