A rare, intimate genre scene by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, depicting his wife and daughter within his personal studio space in 1867.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema is widely recognised for his meticulous depictions of classical antiquity, yet this work offers a rare, intimate glimpse into his personal life. Painted in 1867, 'My Studio' captures the artist's domestic sphere in Brussels, featuring his wife, Pauline, and their young daughter, Anna. The composition is grounded in the reality of the nineteenth-century artist's workspace, where the boundaries between professional production and family life were often porous.
The scene is rendered with the precision characteristic of Alma-Tadema's training. The figures are seated against a wall adorned with framed sketches, a common practice for artists of the period to display their own work or studies by contemporaries. The presence of the small dog resting on the floor adds a sense of quietude to the environment. The lighting is controlled, focusing attention on the figures while the large easel in the foreground acts as a framing device, drawing the viewer into the private world of the painter.
Unlike his later, more famous Roman scenes, this piece relies on a muted, earthy palette. The textures of the clothing, from the heavy fabric of the dresses to the delicate lace of the head covering, demonstrate the artist's technical control. The work provides a documentary record of the domestic arrangements of a successful Victorian-era painter. It avoids the theatricality of his later historical reconstructions, opting instead for a candid observation of his immediate surroundings. The inclusion of the child, who gestures toward the easel, introduces a narrative element, suggesting the curiosity of the next generation within the creative environment of the studio.
