Beschreibung
A quiet, intimate portrait of the artist's mother, rendered in the characteristic matte, textured style of the Nabis movement.
Edouard Vuillard, a member of the Nabis group, frequently turned his gaze toward the domestic sphere. This portrait of his mother captures a quiet, habitual moment within their shared home. Vuillard lived with his mother for much of his life, and she appears in numerous works, often engaged in sewing or other household tasks. The composition reflects the Nabis interest in flattened space and decorative surfaces, moving away from traditional perspective.
The application of paint is textured and matte, characteristic of Vuillard's work on cardboard. He uses a restricted palette of muted tones, allowing the interplay of colour blocks to define the form of the figure. The dark, heavy shape of the mother's clothing contrasts with the lighter, more abstract background. Her posture is slightly hunched, suggesting a focus on her work, while her features remain somewhat obscured by the artist's loose, impressionistic brushwork. This approach creates a sense of intimacy and familiarity, common in his depictions of private life.
Vuillard avoids grand narrative or dramatic lighting. Instead, he focuses on the atmosphere of the room and the presence of the individual within it. The painting functions as a study of light and texture, where the physical surface of the cardboard contributes to the overall effect. By simplifying the visual information, Vuillard directs attention to the quietude of the scene. This work provides a glimpse into the artist's daily environment, demonstrating his ability to find visual interest in the mundane aspects of life. The composition remains balanced, with the figure anchored by the chair and the table, creating a stable, if somewhat enigmatic, presence.

My Mother - Edouard Vuillard
Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
