The composition features three women seated in a garden setting, each engaged with musical instruments. The scene is framed by a dense, patterned border that echoes the aesthetic concerns of the Arts and Crafts movement, where the distinction between fine art and decorative design often blurred.
Maillol employs a rhythmic, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding foliage. The treatment of the drapery and the flattened perspective suggest an interest in Japanese woodblock prints, a common influence among his contemporaries. The figures are arranged in a balanced, circular formation, creating a sense of quiet harmony. The background, filled with stylised trees and undulating ground, serves to unify the foreground figures with the decorative frame.
Before his transition to the monumental bronze figures that defined his later career, Maillol worked extensively in tapestry design, painting, and printmaking.
