A detailed engraving by Rudolf Stang, featuring an allegorical design for a 50 guilder banknote of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
This engraving by Rudolf Stang represents a design for a 50 guilder banknote issued by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Stang, a German engraver known for his precision and technical skill, produced this work during the late nineteenth century. The composition adheres to the formal requirements of currency design, balancing allegorical figures with heraldic symbols and portraiture.
On the left side of the frame, a female figure stands in classical attire, holding a staff and accompanied by a lion. This figure serves as a personification of the Dutch state. To the right, a circular portrait of a monarch is integrated into the decorative border. The surrounding frame features scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs, typical of the ornamental style applied to financial documents of the period. The central area remains empty, intended for the inclusion of text and serial numbers.
The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required for security printing in the nineteenth century. Every line is placed with exactitude to ensure clarity and prevent forgery. The shading on the lion and the drapery of the figure shows the engraver's ability to create volume through cross-hatching and varying line density. The inclusion of the Dutch coat of arms at the bottom centre, complete with the motto 'Je Maintiendrai', reinforces the official nature of the document.
This print offers a view into the intersection of art and commerce. It captures the aesthetic values of the era, where even functional items like currency were treated as opportunities for artistic expression. The monochromatic palette and the clean, structured layout provide a sense of order and authority. As a piece of graphic history, it documents the evolution of banknote design and the role of the master engraver in state administration.
