A refined eighteenth-century portrait by John Singleton Copley, capturing the elegance and social status of Mary Greene Hubbard through precise brushwork and lighting.
John Singleton Copley painted this portrait of Mary Greene Hubbard, the wife of the Boston merchant Daniel Hubbard, around 1764. During this period, Copley established himself as the premier portraitist in colonial America. His work is noted for a precise, objective rendering of his subjects and their material possessions.
In this composition, the sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark, atmospheric background. Her posture is relaxed, yet the arrangement of her arms and the placement of the letter she holds suggest a deliberate, staged quality common to eighteenth-century portraiture. Copley demonstrates his technical skill through the handling of textures: the sheen of the silk dress, the delicate lace at the neckline and cuffs, and the soft skin tones of the subject. The lighting is focused, drawing attention to the face and the hands, while the rest of the figure recedes into the shadows.
This portrait reflects the social aspirations of the colonial merchant class. The sitter wears fashionable attire, signalling status and refinement. Copley avoids the idealised features often found in European portraiture of the time, opting instead for a direct, honest representation of the individual. The painting remains a primary example of Copley's ability to capture both the physical likeness and the social standing of his sitters before he moved to London in 1774. The work is currently held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to be studied for its contribution to the history of American colonial art.
