Aarts, a professor at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, was known for his technical mastery of graphic media, particularly lithography and woodcut. His work often explored themes of human struggle and religious narrative, rendered through a distinctively modern lens.
The composition utilises the stark contrast inherent to the woodcut medium. Aarts employs bold, angular lines to define the figure of Moses, whose body is contorted in a dynamic, almost sculptural pose.
