A traditional Bunjinga ink and colour painting on silk by Nakabayashi Chikkei, depicting a serene mountain retreat.
Nakabayashi Chikkei, a practitioner of the Bunjinga or literati style, produced this work during the late Edo period. The composition follows the traditional vertical hanging scroll format, common in East Asian ink painting. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying primarily on varying densities of ink wash to define the craggy, towering peaks that dominate the upper two-thirds of the frame.
In the foreground, a small, solitary figure crosses a bridge, providing a sense of scale against the imposing geological forms. The architecture of the small dwellings nestled at the base of the cliffs is rendered with precise, delicate brushwork. The trees are depicted with a combination of dry brush strokes for the trunks and lighter, layered washes for the foliage, creating a sense of texture and depth. The mist, represented by the unpainted silk, separates the foreground from the distant mountains, a technique used to suggest atmospheric perspective and spatial recession.
Chikkei was known for his adherence to the styles of the Chinese Southern School, which emphasised personal expression and a scholarly approach to nature. This work reflects that tradition, focusing on the quietude of a secluded retreat. The brushwork is controlled, showing the artist's technical proficiency in managing ink flow and tonal variation. The seal and signature in the upper left corner identify the artist, confirming his authorship within the context of the period's literati circles. The work remains a clear example of the Bunjinga aesthetic, which valued the intellectual and spiritual connection between the artist and the natural world, rather than mere realistic representation.
