A 1756 ink and light colour silk scroll by Fei Hanyuan, depicting a serene mountain retreat with a river, boats, and a contemplative figure.
This hanging scroll, executed in ink and light colour on silk, represents the tradition of Chinese literati painting. Fei Hanyuan, known in Japan as Hi Kangen, produced this work in 1756. The composition follows a vertical format, common in East Asian hanging scrolls, which encourages the viewer to travel visually from the foreground riverbank up to the towering mountain peaks.
The scene depicts a quiet, secluded environment. In the lower section, small boats rest near the shore, while a narrow bridge connects rocky outcrops. Moving upward, the eye encounters a figure resting on a ledge, suggesting a moment of contemplation within the natural world. The artist employs varied brushwork to define the textures of the stone and the foliage of the trees. The mountains are rendered with vertical strokes that convey height and mass, while the water remains largely unpainted, relying on the negative space of the silk to suggest a calm, reflective surface.
The inscription in the upper right corner provides specific historical context, dating the work to the twenty-first year of the Qianlong reign. The use of light colour washes over the ink outlines creates a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on Western perspective. This approach focuses on the internal logic of the scene, prioritising the expression of a mood or a state of mind over strict topographical accuracy. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the scholar-artist sought to capture the essence of nature through disciplined brush control and balanced composition. The inclusion of red seals adds a formal element, authenticating the piece and connecting it to the broader history of Chinese art collecting and connoisseurship.
