This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that redefined the genre of Japanese landscape art. Katsushika Hokusai captures a scene from the Senju pleasure quarter, a location situated along the Nikkō Kaidō road. The composition balances the distant, iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji against the immediate, bustling activity of the foreground.
In the lower right, a group of travellers, likely samurai or officials, carry long red poles as they move past a thatched-roof structure. Their rhythmic, uniform movement provides a sense of narrative progression. The middle ground features a flat, open expanse of fields and waterways, which leads the eye toward the cluster of buildings representing the Senju district.
