A 1935 linocut by Sybil Andrews, featuring the rhythmic, geometric forms and modernist energy characteristic of the Grosvenor School.
Sybil Andrews, a central figure of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, produced this linocut in 1935. The work demonstrates her mastery of the medium, characterised by bold, rhythmic forms and a dynamic use of space. Andrews was known for her ability to reduce complex human movement and emotional states into simplified, geometric shapes, a technique she refined while working alongside Claude Flight at the Grosvenor School.
In this composition, the figures are constructed through sharp, angular planes that suggest both weight and motion. The interaction between the mother and son is conveyed through the physical alignment of their bodies, which are integrated into the structural geometry of the print. The use of a limited colour palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, which Andrews achieved through the precise carving of the linoleum block. The texture of the ink, visible in the printed areas, provides a tactile quality that contrasts with the clean, negative space of the paper.
This print reflects the broader interest among British artists of the interwar period in applying modernist principles to everyday subjects. Andrews moved away from traditional representational styles, opting instead for a visual language that prioritised energy and balance. The composition is not merely a depiction of a domestic scene, but an exploration of form and rhythm. Her work remains a clear example of the technical innovation that defined the Grosvenor School, where artists experimented with the linocut process to create works that were accessible yet aesthetically rigorous. The print captures a moment of stillness, yet the underlying structure suggests a constant, internal movement, typical of Andrews's approach to her subjects.
