A refined hanging scroll painting by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a mother and child interacting around a decorative screen.
This hanging scroll by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a domestic scene involving a mother and her young child. The composition is structured around a central standing screen, which acts as a vertical axis for the figures. The mother, dressed in a kimono patterned with floral motifs, leans slightly toward the screen, while the child, clad in a red garment, reaches upward from the base. The use of a vertical format is characteristic of Koryūsai, who was known for his mastery of the hashira-e, or pillar print, and his skill in adapting figures to narrow spaces.
Koryūsai was a samurai who transitioned into the world of professional printmaking after the death of his lord. His work often features refined lines and a controlled colour palette. In this piece, the muted brown background provides a neutral field that allows the specific colours of the garments, such as the deep blue and red, to remain clear. The figures are rendered with a focus on posture and gesture, capturing a quiet moment of interaction. The screen itself features subtle decorative elements, adding a layer of visual interest without distracting from the primary subjects. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, confirming his authorship of this silk painting.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Koryūsai contributed to the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on depictions of beautiful women. This work demonstrates his ability to balance decorative pattern with human form. The application of ink and colour on silk requires precision, as the medium does not allow for the corrections possible with other materials. The result is a work that maintains a sense of poise and balance, typical of the mid-Edo period aesthetic.
