A detailed pencil sketch by George Chinnery documenting the architecture of the Mosque of Syaf Khan in Dacca during the early nineteenth century.
George Chinnery, a British painter who spent much of his career in India and China, produced this sketch during his extended residence in Dacca (modern-day Dhaka). The work captures the architectural character of the Mosque of Syaf Khan, a structure that reflects the regional Mughal style. Chinnery employs a light, fluid pencil technique to document the site, focusing on the dome, the arched entrances, and the surrounding vegetation that encroaches upon the masonry.
His approach to the subject is observational rather than idealised. The sketch functions as a record of the physical state of the building during the early nineteenth century. Chinnery was known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of his surroundings with minimal strokes, and here he balances the structural geometry of the mosque with the organic, untamed growth of the foliage. The inclusion of small figures near the entrance provides a sense of scale and daily activity, grounding the architectural study in the reality of the location.
This drawing is characteristic of the travel sketches Chinnery produced throughout his time in the East. He often filled his sketchbooks with such studies, which served as both personal records and source material for later, more finished compositions. The lines are precise yet unforced, demonstrating his training in the British tradition of topographical drawing. By documenting the specific details of the mosque, Chinnery provides a view into the historical architecture of Bengal as it appeared to a European visitor at the time. The work remains a clear example of the documentary impulse that drove many artists working in colonial contexts to record the built environment they encountered.
