Beschreibung
A serene woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, depicting a quiet interior space overlooking a moonlit bay.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition captures a quiet moment of observation from an elevated interior space, looking out across a body of water toward the horizon. The scene is defined by the contrast between the interior, with its clean tatami mats and simple furnishings, and the expansive, atmospheric view of the bay at night.
Hiroshige employs a sophisticated use of colour gradients, known as bokashi, to render the transition from the dark upper sky to the lighter horizon line. A full moon hangs in the upper left, accompanied by a small flock of birds in flight. Below, the water is populated by numerous small vessels, their silhouettes adding a sense of scale and activity to the otherwise still environment. The interior space is framed by architectural elements that guide the viewer's eye toward the exterior vista. A shadow cast upon the wall on the left side suggests the presence of a figure, adding a human element to the scene without disrupting the overall sense of calm.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of perspective and his ability to balance geometric interior lines with the organic forms of the water and sky. The inclusion of a pine branch in the lower right corner provides a foreground anchor, typical of Hiroshige's compositional strategies in this series. This work reflects the cultural practice of moon viewing, a seasonal tradition in Japan that encourages quiet reflection on the natural world. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision achieved by Edo-period printmakers, from the initial design to the final application of pigment on paper.
