A refined woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting two women enjoying a summer evening on a pleasure boat near Ryogoku Bridge.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige captures a quiet moment of leisure during the summer months in Edo. The scene is set within a pleasure boat on the Sumida River, near the Ryogoku Bridge. Two women are depicted in the foreground, one holding a small cup and the other pouring sake. Their attire features detailed patterns, typical of the fashion of the period. Above them, large paper lanterns hang from the roof of the boat, providing a sense of scale and framing the composition.
Through the open side of the boat, the viewer sees the dark, flowing water of the river. The bridge and the distant shoreline are suggested in the background, maintaining a sense of atmosphere rather than strict topographical accuracy. The colour palette relies on muted tones, with deep blues for the water and earthy reds for the structure of the boat, balanced by the cream-coloured lanterns.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, known for his ability to convey the mood of a specific time and place. This work belongs to the series Famous Places in Edo in the Four Seasons, which documents the social life and natural beauty of the city. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige, particularly in the application of the wood grain textures and the subtle gradients in the water. The composition uses the architecture of the boat to create a private, intimate space, contrasting with the public nature of the river outside. It offers a glimpse into the customs of the Edo period, where evening boat trips were a common way to escape the summer heat.
