Beschreibung

A minimalist study by Yves Klein, featuring a bold red rectangle set against a simple, hand-drawn theatrical stage.

This work by Yves Klein presents a departure from his better-known International Klein Blue series. The composition depicts a stage-like space framed by simple, hand-drawn curtains in a pale violet hue. At the centre, a solid block of red pigment occupies the void, creating a stark contrast against the white paper. The pencil lines are visible, providing a sense of immediacy and process that is often absent from his finished, large-scale canvases.

Klein is frequently associated with the reduction of painting to its most basic elements. By placing a single, saturated colour within a defined, theatrical setting, he invites the viewer to consider the act of looking itself. The work functions as a study of space and colour, stripping away narrative or representational detail to focus on the physical presence of the pigment. The choice of red, a colour associated with warmth and intensity, provides a different sensory experience compared to his signature blue works.

This piece offers a glimpse into the conceptual development of Klein's practice. It demonstrates his interest in the relationship between the object and the environment. The simplicity of the execution, using basic watercolour and pencil, suggests a preliminary thought or a private exploration of colour theory. It remains a clear example of his desire to move beyond traditional painting techniques, instead using colour as a primary subject. The work is an exercise in restraint, where the interaction between the red rectangle and the surrounding white space defines the entire composition. It is a direct, unadorned observation of how colour can command attention within a confined, architectural frame.

Artist Biography

Yves Klein

Klein patented a colour. International Klein Blue, or IKB, is an ultramarine pigment suspended in a synthetic resin that keeps the colour saturated and matte. He registered it in 1960. The blue is so intense it appears to absorb light. He covered canvases, sponges, plaster casts, and globe sculptures in it. He covered naked women in it and pressed them against canvas (he called them 'Anthropometries' and performed the process in front of an audience while a chamber orchestra played his Monotone-Silence Symphony: twenty minutes of a single sustained chord followed by twenty minutes of silence).

He was born in Nice to artist parents and grew up between France, England, and Spain. He studied judo seriously, earning a fourth-degree black belt in Tokyo, and considered martial arts and art as related disciplines: both requiring control, precision, and the projection of force.

He exhibited an empty gallery in 1958 and called it Le Vide (The Void). Over three thousand people attended the opening. The gallery walls were painted white. There was nothing else. He served blue cocktails at the door. He sold invisible paintings (Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility) for gold, then threw half the gold into the Seine and burned the receipt.

He died of a heart attack in 1962, at thirty-four. His career lasted roughly eight years. In that time he made the monochromes, the Anthropometries, the fire paintings, the sponge sculptures, the void exhibitions, and enough theoretical writing to fill several volumes. He remains one of the most influential artists of the post-war period, which he would have considered insufficient recognition.
