A pair of hanging scrolls by Mori Sosen, depicting Japanese macaques with the artist's characteristic attention to naturalistic detail and texture.
Mori Sosen is widely recognised for his specialised focus on the depiction of monkeys. This pair of hanging scrolls demonstrates his approach to animal portraiture, which combined careful observation with the stylistic conventions of the Edo period. Sosen spent significant time in the mountains to study the behaviour and physical characteristics of Japanese macaques, allowing him to capture their movements and expressions with a degree of accuracy that was uncommon for the era.
The scrolls feature a muted palette, typical of the period, which draws attention to the soft texture of the fur and the subtle gestures of the subjects. The composition is sparse, placing the animals within a void that suggests their natural environment without the need for elaborate background detail. This technique directs the viewer to the interaction between the monkeys, highlighting their social nature and individual character. The use of fine brushwork to render the fur demonstrates the technical skill required to achieve such lifelike results on silk.
As a member of the Maruyama-Shijo school, Sosen moved away from the more rigid, formalised styles of earlier Japanese painting traditions. Instead, he adopted a method that prioritised direct observation of nature. This shift is evident in the way the monkeys are posed, appearing caught in a moment of activity rather than arranged in a static, symbolic fashion. The scrolls retain their original mounting, which provides context for how such works were displayed in a domestic or temple setting. The balance between the negative space and the figures creates a sense of harmony, reflecting the aesthetic values of the time. These works remain a primary example of Sosen's contribution to the genre of animal painting, showing his ability to blend scientific observation with artistic expression.
