A refined woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, depicting a contemporary Edo-period parody of a classic literary scene from the Tales of Ise.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu presents a contemporary eighteenth-century interpretation of a classic literary scene from the Tales of Ise. The original narrative describes two children playing by a well, comparing their heights to the well-curb. Toyonobu reinterprets this classical motif through the lens of his own era, replacing the children with elegant figures dressed in the fashion of the mid-Edo period. The artist employs the benizuri-e technique, which uses a limited palette of pink and green alongside black ink to define the forms.
The composition is structured around the central element of the well-curb, which acts as the anchor for the two figures. A man stands to the left, his posture relaxed as he gestures toward the bucket suspended by a rope. Opposite him, a woman sits, her attention directed toward the well as she holds a small fan. The willow tree hanging from the upper right provides a soft, organic frame for the scene, contrasting with the geometric lines of the well structure and the roof above. Toyonobu is recognised for his ability to capture the grace of his subjects, often elongating their forms to create a sense of refined movement.
The print reflects the cultural practice of mitate-e, or parody pictures, where artists would transpose historical or literary themes into modern settings. This approach allowed viewers to engage with classical literature while enjoying the aesthetic trends of their own time. The clean lines and balanced use of colour demonstrate the technical precision characteristic of Toyonobu's work during this period. The print serves as a record of both the enduring popularity of the Tales of Ise and the stylistic preferences of the urban population in Edo.
