This portrait of Mirope Savati Gaye, painted by the Spanish artist Mariano Fortuny Marsal in 1865, captures the subject in a moment of quiet composure. Fortuny, who spent much of his career in Rome, demonstrates a mastery of tonal control here. The composition relies on a restricted palette, dominated by deep, atmospheric shadows that allow the sitter to emerge from the darkness.

The subject wears a dark, structured gown, typical of mid-nineteenth-century fashion.
