A delicate lacquer painting by Shibata Zeshin, capturing a nocturnal scene with a bird in flight against the moon.
Shibata Zeshin occupies a unique position in Japanese art history, bridging the transition between the Edo period and the modern Meiji era. While primarily recognised as a master of lacquerware, Zeshin was also a highly skilled painter. This work demonstrates his technical mastery of urushi, a medium traditionally used for decorative objects rather than two-dimensional imagery. By applying lacquer to paper, he achieved a tonal range that mimics the fluidity of sumi-e ink wash painting while retaining the physical depth and sheen characteristic of his primary craft.
The composition depicts a nocturnal scene, featuring a large, dark rock formation that dominates the left side of the frame. A single bird is captured in flight against the pale, circular moon, which provides a stark contrast to the surrounding silhouettes of trees. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using the negative space of the paper to suggest mist or atmosphere. This economy of form is a hallmark of Zeshin's aesthetic, which often drew upon the traditions of the Rinpa school while incorporating his own experimental techniques.
Zeshin's ability to manipulate lacquer allowed him to create subtle variations in texture and density that are difficult to replicate with standard ink. The dark, saturated areas of the rock possess a weight that anchors the composition, while the lighter washes suggest the ethereal quality of moonlight.
