A delicate ink wash painting on silk by Kiyohara Yukinobu, depicting a scene from the Heike Monogatari with atmospheric mountains and a winding river.
This ink wash painting by Kiyohara Yukinobu depicts a scene from the Heike Monogatari, a classic of Japanese literature. The narrative concerns the musician Minamoto no Nakakuni, who is sent by the Emperor to locate Lady Kogō, a court lady living in seclusion. The composition relies on the atmospheric technique of ink wash, where varying concentrations of ink create depth and distance. The mountains emerge from a dense mist, while the winding river in the foreground provides a sense of movement and direction.
Kiyohara Yukinobu was a member of the Kusumi family, which was closely associated with the Kano school of painters. Her work reflects the technical training typical of this lineage, yet it maintains a distinct sensitivity to mood and narrative. The use of negative space is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid forms of the mountains and the ethereal quality of the fog. The monochromatic palette emphasises the texture of the silk support, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
In this work, the artist captures the solitude of the setting, which mirrors the isolation of the characters within the story. The brushwork is controlled and precise, demonstrating the skill required to manipulate ink on silk. This piece is an example of the literati-influenced style that became popular among the educated classes of the Edo period. By focusing on a specific literary moment, the painting invites the viewer to consider the emotional weight of the narrative through visual suggestion rather than explicit detail. The work remains a fine example of seventeenth-century Japanese ink painting, demonstrating the balance between traditional technique and individual artistic expression.
