This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Minakuchi, one of the stops along the Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series early in the nineteenth century, focusing on the daily activities of travellers and local inhabitants rather than purely topographical views. The composition shows a roadside rest area where figures are engaged in various tasks. A porter carries goods on a pole across his shoulders, while other individuals sit within the structure, suggesting a moment of respite during a long journey.
The print demonstrates the characteristic flat perspective and clear outlines common to the Ukiyo-e tradition. Hokusai employs a limited palette, using soft tones to define the architecture and the clothing of the figures. The vertical lines of the wooden structure and the texture of the tree trunk provide a sense of order against the movement of the people.
