Beschreibung
A triptych by Otto Dix depicting the social disparities of Weimar-era Berlin through a contrast between jazz-age hedonism and post-war poverty.
Metropolis is a triptych painted by Otto Dix between 1927 and 1928. It functions as a critique of the social conditions in Weimar-era Berlin. The work is divided into three panels: a central scene of a jazz club flanked by two side panels depicting the streets of the city.
In the central panel, Dix presents a scene of hedonistic excess. Dancers in flapper attire move across the floor, accompanied by a jazz band. The lighting is artificial and harsh, casting long shadows that contribute to the sense of unease. The figures are rendered with a sharp, almost grotesque precision, reflecting the artist's interest in the physical reality of his subjects.
The side panels provide a stark contrast to the interior scene. On the left, a war-wounded veteran with a prosthetic leg stands in a dark, narrow alleyway, ignored by the passersby. On the right, figures in opulent furs and evening wear navigate the urban environment, their expressions vacant or weary. The juxtaposition of the wealthy elite and the impoverished victims of the First World War creates a narrative of inequality and moral decay.
Dix employs a palette dominated by deep reds, ochres, and dark shadows to convey the atmosphere of the city. The composition is dense, with figures crowded into the frame to suggest the claustrophobia of urban life. As a representative of the New Objectivity movement, Dix avoids romanticising his subject matter. Instead, he offers a cold, analytical observation of the social tensions present in Germany during the late 1920s. The triptych format, traditionally used for religious altarpieces, is here repurposed to document the secular realities of modern life, replacing saints with the inhabitants of a fractured society.
