A seminal Dada assemblage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring a complex arrangement of found objects, paper, and paint.
Kurt Schwitters developed his own branch of the Dada movement, which he termed Merz. This term originated from a fragment of the word Kommerzbank found in one of his early collages. Merz Picture 25A: The Star Picture is a primary example of his method of collecting discarded materials from the streets of Hanover and reassembling them into new compositions. By removing these items from their original context, Schwitters forced the viewer to consider their formal qualities rather than their utility.
The composition incorporates a variety of textures and materials, including newspaper clippings, wire mesh, string, and painted surfaces. The dark, moody palette is punctuated by fragments of text and geometric shapes. The inclusion of a circular form and the hanging string suggests a celestial or cosmic reference, which provides the work with its title. Unlike the more aggressive or political works of his Berlin Dada contemporaries, Schwitters focused on the aesthetic potential of refuse. He treated these humble objects with the same care traditionally reserved for oil paint on canvas.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to create order from chaos. The arrangement of disparate elements relies on a balance of weight and colour, creating a sense of internal logic despite the unconventional nature of the materials. The work reflects the post-war German environment, where scarcity and the remnants of a fractured society became the primary building blocks for artistic expression. By integrating these fragments, Schwitters created a visual record of his immediate surroundings, transforming the mundane into a structured, abstract arrangement. The piece remains a significant example of early twentieth-century assemblage, showing how the boundaries between fine art and everyday life were dismantled during this period.
