Merrick in Dumfries and Galloway overlooks wooded shores and rolling slopes, with pale rocks scattered through the nearest grass and soft cloud shadows moving across the broad upland landscape.
At 843 metres, this summit is the highest mountain in southern Scotland and the Southern Uplands. It belongs to the Range of the Awful Hand, a distinctive group within the Galloway Hills whose ridges and valleys shape the upland country north of Newton Stewart.
At Merrick, a broad rounded mountain appears beyond a long blue reach of water edged with wooded points. Green slopes alternate with dark conifer belts below the higher ground. Large pale boulders lie among short foreground grass. Lavender shadows and cream cloud edges soften the distant ridges, suggesting clear, changeable sunlight on a late summer afternoon.
