This woodblock print originates from the published memoirs of Hamada Hikozō, also known as Joseph Heco. Hikozō was a Japanese castaway who became the first naturalised Japanese-American citizen. His life story, documented in Hyōryūki, provides a rare perspective on the cultural exchange between Japan and the West during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate.
