A complex, three-panel encaustic painting by Karl Zerbe, exploring themes of introspection and time through symbolic, expressionist imagery.
Karl Zerbe, a German-born artist who became a central figure in the Boston Expressionist movement, created this triptych during a period of significant stylistic development. The work utilises encaustic, a medium involving pigmented hot wax, which provides the surface with a unique, tactile quality. This technique allows for the layering of colours and textures that define the moody, introspective atmosphere of the composition.
The triptych presents a series of disjointed, symbolic vignettes. In the left panel, an elderly figure sits alongside a large wheel and a black cat, surrounded by objects that suggest domesticity and decay. The central panel features a harlequin-like figure and a classical bust, juxtaposed with a clock and a trumpet, evoking themes of time and performance. The right panel depicts a female figure in a more intimate, interior setting, framed by mirrors and portraits.
Zerbe draws upon the visual language of European modernism, particularly the work of Max Beckmann and other German Expressionists. The figures appear isolated, their gazes directed away from the viewer or lost in contemplation. The colour palette is muted, dominated by earthy ochres, deep reds, and charcoal greys, which contribute to the overall sense of unease. The composition is dense, with objects and figures crowded into the frame, creating a sense of claustrophobia. This work reflects the artist's interest in the human condition, using allegory and symbolic objects to explore themes of sadness, memory, and the passage of time. The triptych format, traditionally associated with religious altarpieces, is here repurposed to frame a secular, psychological narrative.
