A reproduction of Gustav Klimt's Medicine, a controversial and symbolic work from the University of Vienna Faculty Paintings series.
This work represents the final state of the Medicine panel, one of the three Faculty Paintings commissioned for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. The commission became a source of public and academic controversy, as Klimt moved away from traditional allegorical depictions of science. Instead, he presented a swirling, chaotic mass of humanity, capturing the cycle of life, suffering, and death.
At the base of the composition, Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, stands with a serpent coiled around her arm, holding the cup of Lethe. She appears detached from the turbulent stream of figures behind her, which includes representations of birth, ageing, and decay. The figures are rendered in a dreamlike, almost ethereal manner, floating within a space that lacks a clear horizon or architectural grounding. Klimt uses a monochromatic palette, relying on subtle shifts in tone to define the forms of the bodies against the dark, atmospheric background.
The painting reflects the shift in Klimt's approach during the early 20th century, moving towards the decorative and symbolic language that would define his later work. The original canvases were destroyed by fire in 1945, leaving only preparatory sketches and black-and-white photographs to document the composition. This print offers a reproduction of the final state, allowing for an examination of the composition and the specific stylistic choices that caused such friction with the university faculty at the time. It remains a significant example of the tension between traditional academic art and the emerging modernism of the Vienna Secession.
