Beschreibung
A haunting etching from Goya's Los Disparates series, depicting a figure in clerical robes balancing on a tightrope above a crowd.
May the rope break (Que se rompe la cuerda) is a plate from the series Los Disparates, also known as Los Proverbios. Francisco Goya produced these works during his later years, often working in isolation at his home, the Quinta del Sordo. This series is characterised by its dark, enigmatic, and often grotesque imagery, which departs from the more literal social commentary found in his earlier series like Los Caprichos.
In this print, a figure dressed in ecclesiastical robes balances precariously on a tightrope above a dense, indistinct crowd. The composition relies on the tension between the solitary, elevated figure and the mass of humanity below. The rope itself cuts diagonally across the frame, creating a sense of instability. Goya uses aquatint to create atmospheric depth and shadow, which adds to the unsettling nature of the scene. The figure's arms are outstretched, suggesting a desperate attempt to maintain equilibrium or perhaps a theatrical display of authority that is inherently fragile.
Art historians often interpret this work as a critique of the Church or the Spanish monarchy during the period of political upheaval in the early 19th century. The title itself acts as a grim wish for the collapse of the status quo. The crowd below is rendered with loose, expressive marks, contrasting with the more defined form of the tightrope walker. This print demonstrates Goya's mastery of printmaking techniques, using the medium to convey complex psychological and political themes without the need for explicit narrative. It remains a stark example of his ability to capture the absurdity and danger of human power structures through visual metaphor.
