A serene depiction of the Florence Griswold House at night, capturing the atmospheric light and quiet mood of a spring evening in Connecticut.
May Night, painted by Willard Metcalf in 1906, is a definitive example of American Impressionism. The work depicts the Florence Griswold House in Old Lyme, Connecticut, bathed in the soft, ethereal glow of moonlight. Metcalf captures the architectural precision of the colonial revival structure, contrasting the stark white columns with the deep, atmospheric shadows of the surrounding foliage. The composition is anchored by the house, which sits centrally, while a lone figure in a white dress walks across the lawn, adding a sense of quiet narrative to the scene.
Metcalf utilised a palette dominated by cool greens, greys, and whites to convey the specific quality of light during a spring evening. His brushwork is controlled yet fluid, allowing for the soft diffusion of light across the grass and the facade of the building. This painting earned Metcalf the Corcoran Gallery of Art's gold medal, which brought him significant recognition within the American art community of the early twentieth century. The work reflects the artist's interest in the tonal qualities of the New England environment, moving away from the more fragmented brushwork of French Impressionism toward a more unified, atmospheric approach.
The painting remains a study in light and mood. The interplay between the illuminated architecture and the encroaching darkness of the trees creates a sense of stillness. By focusing on the subtle transitions of tone rather than sharp detail, Metcalf invites the viewer to experience the calm of a late spring night. The presence of the figure provides scale and a human element, grounding the architectural subject in a lived-in, temporal space.
