A serene American Impressionist painting by Willard Metcalf, capturing the soft light and budding greenery of a New England spring afternoon.
Willard Metcalf painted May Afternoon in 1922, a period when he focused on the rural scenery of New England. The composition captures a gentle slope during the spring season, characterised by the pale, budding foliage of trees and the soft light of a temperate afternoon. Metcalf employs a technique that balances observational accuracy with the painterly qualities associated with the American Impressionist movement.
The foreground features a dirt path that winds through a grassy field, leading the eye toward the middle distance where cattle graze near a cluster of flowering trees. These trees, rendered in light, cool tones, suggest the arrival of spring. The background consists of rolling hills, painted with a softer focus to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The brushwork is visible throughout the canvas, particularly in the treatment of the grass and the textured surface of the earth, which adds a tactile quality to the scene.
Metcalf was a member of the Ten, a group of American artists who broke away from the Society of American Artists to exhibit their work independently. His approach to light and colour reflects his training in France, yet his subject matter remains firmly rooted in the specific character of the American countryside. By avoiding overly dramatic effects, he achieves a quiet, observational quality that invites the viewer to consider the subtle shifts in colour and light present in the natural world. The palette is dominated by shades of green, pale blue, and earthy browns, which work together to convey the freshness of the season. This work remains a representative example of his later career, showing his ability to capture the specific atmosphere of a location through careful observation and a refined application of paint.
