A seminal work of Italian Futurism, Materia depicts the artist's mother integrated into a fractured, dynamic urban environment through prismatic light and form.
Materia, painted by Umberto Boccioni in 1912, represents a significant exploration of the Futurist interest in the interaction between a subject and its environment. The work depicts the artist's mother, Cecilia Forlani, seated on a balcony in Milan. Her figure is rendered with a monumental quality, her hands clasped firmly in her lap, acting as a central anchor for the composition.
Boccioni employs a fractured, prismatic technique to dissolve the boundaries between the figure and the urban space surrounding her. The architectural elements of the balcony and the street below are integrated into the form of the sitter, suggesting a continuous flow of energy and light. The painting uses a palette of warm ochres, deep blues, and sharp reds to create a sense of dynamic movement. By breaking the image into geometric planes, Boccioni attempts to capture the sensation of simultaneity, where the internal experience of the subject and the external reality of the city exist in the same visual field.
This work demonstrates the artist's application of Divisionist brushwork, which he adapted to suit the aggressive, modern aesthetic of the Futurist movement. The light appears to emanate from within the forms themselves, rather than falling upon them from an external source. The result is a complex, layered image that prioritises the sensation of modern life over traditional representational accuracy. It remains a primary example of how early twentieth-century painters sought to reconcile the human form with the rapid industrialisation of the urban environment.
