Mol, who trained in Paris under Jacques-Louis David, brought a rigorous approach to form and anatomy to his work. This drawing demonstrates his technical skill in handling black chalk, using subtle gradations to model the features of the Virgin Mary. The application of white heightening adds a sense of volume to the drapery and the hands, which are crossed in a gesture of resignation.
The composition focuses on the internal state of the subject. Her head is bowed, and her eyes are closed, directing the viewer to the emotional weight of the figure rather than external narrative elements.
