A striking ink and watercolour study by José Gutiérrez Solana, depicting two masked figures in a moment of grim social interaction.
José Gutiérrez Solana was a Spanish painter and writer known for his preoccupation with the darker, more grotesque aspects of Spanish life. His work often features carnival figures, beggars, and the rural poor, rendered with a stark, unflinching gaze. In this piece, Masks Drinking, the artist captures two figures whose faces are obscured by masks, creating an unsettling atmosphere of anonymity and artifice. The seated figure tilts a bottle back, while the standing companion watches, their postures rigid and slightly awkward.
Solana utilised a distinct, heavy-handed line quality that defines the forms of his subjects. The ink work is dense, creating shadows and textures that suggest a worn, impoverished reality. The application of watercolour is restrained, providing just enough tone to separate the figures from the aged, parchment-like background. This aesthetic choice aligns with the artist's broader interest in the 'España negra' or 'Black Spain' movement, which sought to document the harsh conditions and traditional customs of the country during the early twentieth century.
The composition is straightforward, focusing entirely on the interaction between the two figures. By using masks, Solana removes individual identity, turning the subjects into archetypes of human vice or desperation. The lack of a detailed background ensures that the viewer remains focused on the physical gestures and the eerie expressions of the masks themselves. This print captures the artist's ability to blend social observation with a personal, somewhat grim, stylistic vision. It is a representative example of his graphic work, which often served as a precursor to his larger oil paintings. The piece offers a glimpse into the specific cultural anxieties of the period, presented through a lens that avoids sentimentality in favour of a raw, graphic honesty.
