A refined Neoclassical etching depicting the martyrdom of Saint Cecilia, featuring the saint, her executioner, and a descending angel.
This print depicts the final moments of Saint Cecilia, a subject frequently explored in European art. The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth-century Italian printmaking, focusing on the dramatic interaction between the executioner and the saint. Saint Cecilia kneels in a posture of resignation, her hands bound, while the executioner stands over her with a sword. Above, an angel descends to offer a crown, a traditional symbol of martyrdom. The inclusion of a violin and sheet music at the base of the scene references the saint's traditional association with music.
The work is executed in a monochromatic sepia tone, which provides a sense of unity and focus on the draughtsmanship. The lines are clear and deliberate, characteristic of the period's preference for structural clarity over painterly ambiguity. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical proportion and classical drapery, reflecting the influence of Neoclassical ideals that permeated the artistic circles of the time. The background remains minimal, ensuring the viewer's attention stays fixed on the central narrative action.
Santi Pacini, an Italian artist active during the latter half of the eighteenth century, produced this work as a reproduction of a composition by Orazio Riminaldi. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate complex painted scenes into the medium of etching. By stripping away colour, the artist invites an examination of the composition's balance and the emotional weight of the figures. This piece serves as a record of the period's interest in religious iconography and the dissemination of classical themes through print media. It is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production, where the original invention of one artist is interpreted and preserved by the technical expertise of another.
