Jules Dupré was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who moved away from the formal studio traditions of the early nineteenth century to focus on direct observation of nature. This work captures a low-lying marshy expanse under a heavy, atmospheric sky. The composition is dominated by the sky, which occupies the majority of the canvas, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork that conveys the movement of clouds and the shifting quality of light.

In the lower third of the painting, the horizon line is kept low, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures of the damp earth and the small, indistinct forms of cattle grazing in the distance.
