A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the post station of Mariko blanketed in winter snow, from the Reisho Tokaido series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, a later iteration of his famous travelogues documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. The Reisho Tokaido is distinguished by the use of reisho (clerical script) for the series title in the cartouche, a departure from the more common styles found in his earlier series.
In this composition, Hiroshige depicts the post station of Mariko under a heavy snowfall. The scene captures the quiet atmosphere of a winter evening. The dark, indigo sky contrasts with the white expanse of snow covering the thatched roofs and the surrounding hills. Hiroshige employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to look down upon the village as travellers make their way through the cold. The trees, rendered with delicate lines, stand as dark silhouettes against the snowy slopes.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of the woodblock medium during the mid-nineteenth century. The gradation of colour in the sky, known as bokashi, provides a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective. The composition relies on the balance between the geometric shapes of the buildings and the organic forms of the hills. Hiroshige avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the mood and the specific conditions of the environment. The print serves as a record of the travel experience along the Tokaido road, reflecting the popularity of travel-themed art in Edo-period Japan. The inclusion of the cartouche and the artist's signature provides the necessary context for the work within the broader series, which remains a primary source for understanding the geography and social life of the era.
