A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting the dramatic historical narrative of Maria Milet and her confrontation with soldiers.
This etching by the Dutch publisher and engraver Jan Claesz ten Hoorn depicts a dramatic historical narrative set during the Eighty Years' War. The scene illustrates the story of Maria Milet, a woman who sought retribution against soldiers who had violated her. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the interior of a room where the confrontation occurs, and a glimpse through an open doorway showing the subsequent execution of the protagonist.
In the foreground, the artist employs a dynamic arrangement of figures. The soldiers are shown in states of alarm and physical reaction, their postures exaggerated to convey the suddenness of the conflict. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work defines the textures of their period clothing, the table linens, and the architectural elements of the room. The perspective is slightly forced, drawing the eye toward the central figure of Maria Milet, whose actions drive the narrative forward. Through the doorway, a smaller, secondary scene shows a soldier firing a weapon at a female figure, providing a grim conclusion to the event described in the caption below the image.
Ten Hoorn was active in Amsterdam during the late seventeenth century, primarily known for his work as a publisher of books and prints. This piece reflects the period's interest in historical chronicles and moralising tales. The print is marked with the header 'Derde Afdeling. Fol: 122', indicating its origin as a plate from a larger historical volume or collection. The technical execution demonstrates the standard practices of Dutch printmaking of the era, focusing on clear narrative communication and the precise rendering of period costume and interior detail. It serves as a visual record of the popular historical accounts that circulated in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century.
