A Baroque study by Pier Francesco Morazzone depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ, rendered in ink and wash with white gouache highlights.
This drawing by Pier Francesco Morazzone, a Lombard painter active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, depicts the Virgin Mary as Mediatrix alongside Christ as the Lord of the World. The composition reflects the dramatic sensibilities of the early Baroque period, employing a sophisticated use of light and shadow to define the celestial figures. Morazzone uses brown wash to create depth, while white gouache highlights provide a luminous quality to the drapery and the surrounding clouds.
The figures are arranged in a balanced, circular formation, typical of the devotional art of the era. Christ sits to the right, holding the orb of the world, while the Virgin Mary gestures towards him, embodying her role as an intercessor. Below them, a group of putti emerges from the clouds, adding a sense of movement and lightness to the scene. Above, the Holy Spirit is represented by a dove, enclosed within a radiant halo that draws the eye to the centre of the composition.
Morazzone was known for his expressive, often muscular figure style, which drew influence from the Mannerist tradition while embracing the emotional intensity of the Counter-Reformation. His technical approach in this work, combining fluid ink lines with layered washes, demonstrates a mastery of draftsmanship. The paper tone, aged to a warm, earthy hue, provides a neutral ground that allows the white heightening to stand out with clarity. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory process of a Baroque master, showing how complex theological themes were translated into visual form through careful study and execution. The work is a fine example of the period's focus on spiritual narrative, rendered with technical precision and a clear sense of compositional harmony.
