Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this large-scale allegorical portrait in 1663. The work depicts Margarita Trip dressed in the guise of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, while she instructs her younger sister, Anna Maria Trip. The composition employs the conventions of history painting to elevate the status of the sitters, who belonged to one of the most prominent families in the Dutch Republic.

Bol utilises a sophisticated arrangement of figures and symbolic elements to convey the virtues of the subjects. Margarita wears a plumed helmet and breastplate, traditional attributes of Minerva, while a peacock stands behind her, further linking her to the goddess. Two putti are present, one of whom carries a large book, reinforcing the theme of education and intellectual pursuit. The use of light and shadow, a hallmark of Bol's training in the Rembrandt studio, directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the two sisters as they focus on a manuscript.
