A striking Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicting a dramatic scene from the kabuki play Momiji gari.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts a scene from the kabuki play Momiji gari, or Maple Leaf Viewing. The composition captures a moment of high tension between two characters: the warrior-monk Koremochi and the demon disguised as the Princess Sarashina. Sharaku, active only for a brief period in the late eighteenth century, is known for his unconventional approach to actor portraiture. Unlike his contemporaries who often idealised their subjects, Sharaku employed a degree of psychological realism and exaggerated features to convey the intensity of the performance.
The print displays the characteristic flat perspective and bold line work associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition. The demon, looming behind the kneeling Koremochi, is rendered with sharp, angular features and long, flowing hair that creates a sense of impending threat. The warrior, meanwhile, is shown in a defensive posture, his expression one of focused concentration. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted greens, soft pinks, and earthy tones against a neutral background. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the dynamic interaction between the figures rather than decorative elements.
Sharaku's work remains a subject of study for its departure from the standard aesthetic norms of the Edo period. His ability to capture the essence of a theatrical performance through simplified forms and expressive gestures provides a window into the popular culture of the time. This print serves as an example of the artist's brief but impactful contribution to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints. The fine lines defining the fabric patterns and the demon's horns demonstrate the technical skill involved in the woodblock printing process, where each colour required a separate carved block. The work is a representative piece of late eighteenth-century Japanese graphic art.
