A fine art print of a classical Japanese manuscript page by Konoe Taneie, featuring elegant ink calligraphy from the Eiga taigai poetic treatise.
This manuscript page presents a section of the Eiga taigai, or Fundamentals of Poetic Composition, a treatise originally compiled by the poet Fujiwara no Teika during the Kamakura period. This specific version is attributed to the hand of Konoe Taneie, a prominent court noble and calligrapher of the Muromachi period. The text serves as a guide for the composition of waka poetry, outlining stylistic principles and aesthetic standards for the genre.
The visual character of the work is defined by the fluid, rhythmic application of ink. The characters exhibit a high degree of variation in stroke weight, reflecting the traditional Japanese calligraphic style known as wayo. The brushwork is confident and expressive, with ligatures connecting individual characters to create a sense of continuous motion across the page. The paper itself shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that provides a neutral background for the dark ink.
Konoe Taneie was known for his mastery of the brush, and this manuscript demonstrates his technical proficiency. The arrangement of the text follows the conventions of classical Japanese book production, with vertical columns of characters reading from right to left. The annotations and marginalia, likely added by the scribe or subsequent readers, provide additional context to the primary text. This piece offers a glimpse into the scholarly practices of the Japanese aristocracy, where the study of classical literature and the refinement of calligraphic skill were essential pursuits. The preservation of such documents allows for the study of both the evolution of the Japanese language and the aesthetic values of the period.
