This work by Lü Ji, a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, exemplifies the bird-and-flower genre that flourished under imperial patronage. The composition balances the verticality of a weathered rock formation against the horizontal movement of the water and the ducks. Lü Ji employs a meticulous technique, using fine brushwork to define the plumage of the birds and the delicate petals of the hibiscus flowers. The muted, aged tones of the silk provide a neutral backdrop, allowing the subtle colouration of the ducks and the white blossoms to emerge with clarity.
Lü Ji was active in the imperial court, where his work was valued for its technical precision and adherence to traditional aesthetics. The painting follows the conventions of the Zhe School, which favoured a decorative yet naturalistic approach. The inclusion of the cotton rose hibiscus and the mandarin ducks carries symbolic weight, as these subjects are traditional motifs representing marital fidelity and seasonal change.
