A detailed portrait of Maharana Jawan Singh of Mewar, featuring the ruler in traditional court attire with a falcon, painted in the Mewar style.
This portrait depicts Maharana Jawan Singh of Mewar, who reigned from 1828 to 1838. Attributed to the artist Ghasi, who was active in the Mewar court during the early nineteenth century, the work follows the established conventions of Rajput court portraiture. The Maharana is shown in profile, a standard orientation for royal figures in this tradition, which emphasises the regal bearing and the specific attributes of his rank.
He stands against a deep blue background, holding a falcon on his gloved left hand. His attire is rendered with meticulous attention to detail, featuring a translucent jama over a gold-embroidered undergarment. The jewellery, including the multi-strand pearl necklace and the elaborate turban ornament, is executed with fine brushwork and gold leaf. The surrounding foliage is stylised, creating a formalised garden setting that frames the central figure. A circular halo behind his head signifies his royal status, a common motif in Indian court painting to denote divine or sovereign authority.
The composition is contained within a series of coloured borders, a characteristic feature of Indian miniature painting. The outer pink border provides a contrast to the saturated tones of the central scene. The use of opaque watercolour allows for the application of flat, bold areas of colour, while the gold accents provide a sense of material luxury appropriate to the subject matter. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the Mewar court, where the documentation of the ruler's appearance and his association with symbols of power, such as the falcon, remained a primary objective for court artists.
This print captures the precision of the original miniature, preserving the balance between the decorative elements and the portraiture. It is a representative example of the late Mewar style, which maintained traditional techniques while responding to the visual culture of the period.
