A detailed 18th-century Mewar miniature painting depicting Maharana Amar Singh II in a courtly garden setting, rendered with the signature stippling technique.
This miniature painting originates from the Mewar court in Rajasthan, India, during the early 18th century. It depicts Maharana Amar Singh II, who reigned from 1698 to 1710, in a courtyard setting outside the Picture Hall at Rajnagar. The composition is organised into distinct registers, a common feature of the Mewar school, which allows for a narrative flow across the surface of the paper.
The upper section shows the Maharana standing in a relaxed posture, surrounded by ladies of the zenana. The architectural elements, including the arched doorways and the lattice-work screens, are rendered with precision. The lower section of the painting features a collection of animals, including hunting dogs, cranes, and peacocks, which adds a sense of courtly life and natural observation to the scene. The use of gold leaf and opaque pigments creates a surface that catches the light, typical of the high-quality court commissions of the period.
The artist, known as the Stipple Master, is identified by the characteristic application of small, dense dots of pigment to create shading and texture, particularly on the figures and the architectural details. This technique provides a sense of volume to the clothing and the forms of the animals. The colour palette is dominated by earthy ochres, soft greens, and muted blues, which balance the decorative elements of the composition. The work provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Rajput courts, where the depiction of the ruler in a private, domestic setting was a common subject. The inclusion of birds in cages and the carefully arranged garden elements suggest a controlled, serene environment, reflecting the status and leisure activities of the Mewar royalty.
