A detailed 18th-century Rajasthani miniature painting depicting Maharaja Baghji with his infant son and courtiers in a formal setting.
This miniature painting, attributed to the artist Ala Bagas, depicts Maharaja Baghji in a formal court setting. The composition is structured within an architectural frame, typical of the Marwar school of Rajasthan. The Maharaja sits centrally on a cushioned dais, holding a small pipe, while his infant son rests nearby. He is surrounded by attendants and courtiers, some of whom are engaged in musical performance, while others offer service or maintain a respectful posture.
The work employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the clear arrangement of figures and decorative elements over spatial depth. The colour palette is dominated by saturated tones, including a deep red border, a bright blue sky visible through the arched openings, and a patterned carpet featuring floral motifs. Gold leaf is applied to the garments and architectural details, reflecting the status of the figures depicted. The figures are rendered with precise outlines and profile views, a hallmark of the period's stylistic conventions.
Every element, from the musical instruments to the specific patterns on the textiles, is executed with attention to detail. The scene captures a moment of domestic and political stability, presenting the ruler in a controlled, ceremonial environment. The use of opaque watercolour allows for the layering of pigments, creating a smooth surface finish that is characteristic of high-quality Rajasthani court art from the early 18th century. This print reproduces the original work, maintaining the balance between the architectural geometry and the fluid, decorative patterns of the clothing and floor coverings.
